Sportswear Washing Guide
It’s commonly known, or at least we assume so, that washing sportswear should be done at lower temperatures. But why is that exactly? In this blog, we’ll tell you how to wash your sportswear to make it last up to 2 times longer. Yes, really, even the most experienced washers can probably learn a thing or two.
Read the Label
Step 1 is, of course, to read the label carefully. Sometimes, your sportswear may contain different materials than you might think. As a result, you might want to skip certain wash programs. Even in our clothing, it’s indicated in the collar how to wash it and whether or not you can iron it.
Wash Cold
Preferably, always wash sportswear in cold water. Ideally, use a program below 30 degrees Celsius or even hand wash. Warm temperatures can break elastic fibers, causing your clothing to lose its shape. This, in turn, might affect your performance during sports. Cold water is sufficient to remove odors from the fabric without compromising the quality of your sportswear.
Gentle Detergent
When washing with cold water, also use a detergent that is free from aggressive chemicals and additives. The stronger the detergent, the greater the chance of damaging the fabric fibers. You can simply search online for detergents suitable for washing sportswear. These work well at cold temperatures, remove odors, and help maintain the fabric’s integrity.
Inside Out
To preserve colors and prevent wear, it’s best to always wash your sportswear inside out. This protects the outside of the fabric and ensures it stays looking good for longer. Washing sharp edges, buttons, or zippers together with your clothing can cause damage to the outer surface of your product.
Air Dry
You should never use a dryer to dry sportswear. The heat reduces the elasticity of the fabric and can even cause shrinkage. We recommend drying sportswear on a rack to ensure it lasts longer.
The Test
At TD Sportswear, we make custom sportswear for cycling, triathlon, running, fitness, soccer, and tennis of the highest quality. To prevent fabric damage and color fading, we use the highest quality fabrics and ink. We’ll never recommend it, but even when we test washing our sportswear at 60 degrees for 2 hours, it comes out unscathed. However, we’ve never washed it hot continuously for months, so it might wear out faster.
