Determining your cycling clothing size, how do you do that again? It can sometimes be tricky to determine the right clothing size. Not only because people’s weight can fluctuate (speaking from experience), but also because every body is different. For example, with cyclists, you often see that jeans quickly become too tight. Additionally, t-shirts tend to fit more loosely around the arms. Fortunately, when it comes to personalized cycling clothing, you can play around with sizing quite a bit. However, it remains difficult to find the suitable sizes for everyone. Each brand varies, and then you also have to deal with tight and loose fits within clothing lines.
Use a size chart
It’s advisable to always refer to a size chart when purchasing clothing. A size chart is often a chart filled with numbers. It can be quite difficult to determine your exact size from there. Often, you’ll find that the length is correct but the width varies. From experience, it’s been found that the chest circumference is always the leading measure for shirts and jackets. Always measure the circumference of your chest at the widest point. This way, your shirt won’t be too tight. For choosing the right pants size, you can rely on the hip circumference. Also, measure the circumference of the hips at the widest point.
The sleeves are often elastic and will therefore adjust to the arms. At TD, we’ve compiled a size chart with the average sizes of our customers. However, there may still be slight differences per clothing line. For instance, the Elite line is tighter and aimed at professional cyclists. On the other hand, the Sport line is slightly looser and aimed at recreational cyclists.
Use fitting clothing
If you’re really unsure, you can always ask for fitting clothing. Always choose a cycling clothing size that fits comfortably. Don’t think that you’ll “grow” into a shirt. Also, never choose clothing that is too tight. You’ll regret it, and it’s not good for the quality of the zipper. In the end, there’s always a sleeve to adjust. Eventually, everyone can find a suitable shirt or shorts. If necessary, you can even order clothing up to size 8XL.
Jersey length
We often hear that jersey seem very short at the front during fitting. However, there’s a reason for this. When you sit in a cycling position on your road bike, you’ll see that the shirt isn’t as short anymore. Jerseys are always short at the front to prevent them from curling up during cycling. Additionally, jerseys often seem long at the back, falling over the buttocks. Again, it’s important to sit in the cycling position. You’ll see that the jersey is suddenly much shorter.
