Sustainable Production Methods in Sportswear
Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s becoming increasingly prominent and is expected to become mandatory within a few years: sustainability, particularly in the sportswear industry’s production methods. At TD, we’re committed to embracing this movement as much as possible to make a positive impact on our planet. Let’s explore what’s already being done and what can be achieved in the future.
Why are sustainable production methods important?
The production of textiles historically hasn’t always prioritized environmental impact. The industry consumes a lot of water, emits significant pollutants, and generates considerable waste. Additionally, with the global population becoming wealthier and demanding more textiles, industry emissions have only increased in recent years. As a result, many countries are already mandating sustainable practices for producers and brands. We wholeheartedly agree with this direction and strive to exceed minimum requirements because we value the health of our planet.
How is sportswear produced sustainably?
At TD, we employ various sustainability methods throughout our supply chain:
- Sustainable materials: We increasingly use fabrics made from recycled polyester, often sourced from PET bottles or other plastic remnants.
- Energy efficiency: We aim to use renewable energy sources like wind and solar power in our production. These methods are seeing significant adoption in the countries where we operate.
- Water conservation: We invest in methods that reduce water usage during production, minimizing wastewater volume and ensuring it doesn’t harm the environment.
- Waste minimization: We send all fabric scraps to recycling companies that convert them into sustainable materials, nearly eliminating production waste. Our packaging efforts focus on tightly packing garments and reducing plastic use wherever possible.
Benefits of sustainable sportswear
Sustainable sportswear offers numerous benefits for the environment that are often underestimated:
- Environmental friendliness: Opting for sustainable sportswear immediately reduces your ecological footprint and lessens the industry’s impact on the planet.
- Quality and performance: Sustainable materials are often of higher quality, enhancing performance during intense workouts while contributing positively to the world.
- Ethics and responsibility: Sustainable sportswear is typically produced under ethical conditions, respecting workers’ health and safety.
The future
We sincerely hope this emerging trend continues to grow. Traditionally, the textile industry has been fiercely competitive, driven by fast fashion and a race to minimize costs, often at the expense of sustainability. With more consumers demanding sustainable clothing, we’ve observed that price is becoming less of a barrier, allowing us to deliver higher-quality garments. This shift also allows us to focus more on employee well-being and production process sustainability.
