Why is sustainable sportswear so important?
Today, we’re discussing a topic that’s often talked about: why is sustainable sportswear important? What makes it so crucial? And when you’re holding a shirt in your hands, do you have any idea whether it’s sustainable or not? That’s often hard to determine. But read on in this blog to learn how you can tell if your sports attire is good for the people who make it, the environment, and even for yourself.
The people behind the product
Often overlooked, most clothing is still made in factories. Opting for sustainable fabrics and inks has less impact on the workers. This is because the fabrics don’t need to be completely remade, resulting in fewer unnecessary emissions/substances during the production process. If sustainability is important to you, consider checking if the brand is transparent about the production location and the conditions of the production team.
The environment
Of course, we all want to do something for the environment. Did you know that you can make a polyester T-shirt with twenty recycled bottles? So, it’s a win-win, you might say. However, we always recommend (if possible) sourcing the bottles close to where they’re melted down into polyester fabric. This is because the transportation of bottles isn’t always as efficient when it comes to CO2 reduction.
The fabrics and ink themselves
The leftover fabrics from the production process are often discarded. Yet, some suppliers are aware of this issue. These fabrics are then reused in the production of new items. Additionally, experienced suppliers have production “templates” that ensure the fabric is used to its maximum capacity. This means minimizing the leftover pieces that are often not used. When the pieces are cut, there will be little waste fabric remaining.
And sustainability for yourself
Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? What may be less known is that your skin can absorb substances it comes into contact with. Therefore, always opt for a manufacturer or supplier with the OEKO-TEX certification. It’s a strict certification and control process to ensure that the fabrics and products you use are not harmful to the user, the environment, or the producer. It’s comforting to know that your workouts remain as healthy as possible.
Custom made
Lastly, we always advocate for custom-made sportswear. This eliminates the need for stock, and the products don’t go out of fashion, making them less trend-sensitive. Preferably, choose basic colors that are always in style. For example, avoid using years so that the attire doesn’t become “old” the following year. When you get a professional product from TD Sportswear, you know it will last for years to come. So, always try to choose for the people behind the product, the environment, and yourself.
